Who is Tom Hauley?
Since its opening on 3rd December 1989, the Tom Hauley Room—named in honour of the man whose generosity made it possible—has played a central role in the life of All Saints Church and the wider Harbury community.
Over the years, it has been a place of welcome and gathering for so many. Countless family occasions, both joyful and reflective, have been held here: birthday celebrations, wedding receptions, christening parties, and wakes. It has also been home to regular coffee mornings, raising thousands of pounds for charitable causes, as well as meetings, groups, and community activities of all kinds.
But who was Tom Hauley?
Samuel Thomas Hauley—known simply as “Tom”—moved to Harbury with his family in 1932. His father kept a smallholding at West End Cottage on Mill Street, where they raised chickens and sold eggs and poultry. After his father’s death, Tom turned the land into an orchard.
In time, Tom left his cottage and land to the church. It was this generous bequest, together with the dedication of a fundraising committee formed after his death, that enabled the creation of the Tom Hauley Room—fulfilling his original wish for the church “to install a toilet”, and achieving far more besides.
At the heart of Tom’s gift was his deep Christian faith and lifelong service to All Saints’. He was a devoted member of the congregation: a chorister for 50 years, a Churchwarden, School Governor, and bell ringer. He cared for the church and its grounds, raised and lowered the tower flag, maintained the bells, and from 1939 until his death in 1987, wound the church clock twice daily. He was a familiar sight in the village, making his steady way up the hill each day—often several times—to serve the church, including ringing the Angelus at noon.
Tom was known as a shy and humble man, yet he was deeply respected and warmly regarded by all who knew him.
Today, his legacy lives on through the life of the room that bears his name. It continues to be a place of hospitality, friendship, and community—true to the spirit in which his gift was given. Initiatives such as “Tom’s Teas”, held regularly in the room, reflect that same vision: a welcoming space where people can gather, share conversation, and build connections.
As we use the Tom Hauley Room, whatever the occasion, we remember with gratitude Tom himself, and all those whose generosity and effort have made this space possible. In doing so, we give thanks for a gift that continues to bless the church and community today.
