Thought for the day

Thought for the day

St Cuthbert’s Day

“On you was I cast ever since I was born; you are my God even from my mother’s womb”.  Words from Psalm 22.  Words that Jesus prayed on the cross.  Life is a gift.  Life is precious and precarious.  21st Century humanity, even in our most advanced societies, is reconnecting with those realities in the most fundamental way.
“Be not far from me, for trouble is near at hand, and there is none to help.”
Words that follow immediately afterwards in the psalm.  Words that Jesus prayed on the cross.  God felt far off, even for Jesus.  But God was in the midst and God brought life out of death.
Let’s call the church, the nation, the world to rediscover that God, the giver of life, is here to help.  Let’s call people to join in the National Day of Prayer on Sunday, and to make every day a day of prayer.  And let’s be inspired by St Cuthbert, faithful in prayer in the solitude of his Island and in the bustle of ministry on road.
